Haunted High scaring up actors; masquerade ball planned

City of Oconomowoc— It's never too soon to get your fright on, at least according to organizers of the upcoming Haunted High.

Event planners are summoning up the spirits of all ghosts and goblins, witches and warlocks and all manner of scary things in between to join the efforts behind the successful fundraiser at the former Oconomowoc Middle School.

Interested spirits who are at least 14 years old are to meet at the Haunted High ( 550 E. Forest Street in Oconomowoc) at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13. On Monday you will participate in a behind-the-scenes tour that will reveal spook opportunities; a free Haunted High T-shirt awaits those who dare to look behind the walls.

A minimum of 70 volunteers per night are needed to run the attraction. This year's schedule of "haunts" will begin Friday, Oct. 1, and will admit "victims" every Friday and Saturday night from 7 to 10:30 p.m. through Oct. 23. Tickets are $13, with a fast pass available for $23. A "Lights On" day is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, with admission at $8 per ticket.

Haunted High is looking for every imaginable kind of volunteer to make this year's event a success, including those willing to help with construction/technical set-up; materials/special effects; ticket, food and merchandise sales; parking/security; cleaning; and, of course, all the scary acting jobs to make it all worthwhile. To volunteer, contact Sue Herro at susan_herro@hotmail.com or call (262) 567-3420.

"Haunted High was a phenomenal successful fundraiser for Oconomowoc Public Education Fund (OPEF)," said Tamara Hauck, last year's spookmaster. "And this year's haunt experience is bigger, badder and better than we ever dreamed."

Last year, Haunted High drew 6,000 visitors and raised nearly $50,000. Proceeds from Haunted High and OPEF's Haunted Ball will benefit the Oconomowoc Area School District in the form of grants toward materials, equipment and projects to improve educational outcomes.

OPEF is a charitable foundation created in 2007 to allow for private, tax-deductible contributions in support of innovative educational opportunities not available within the taxpayer-funded Oconomowoc Area School District budget. The foundation oversees several funds, including the OPEF general fund, which awards grants annually based on criteria determined by the OPEF Grants Committee; the Performing Arts Center Enhancement (PACE) Fund to support enhancements built into the Oconomowoc Arts Center; and the Jennifer Bukosky Fund, a memorial fund that supports alcohol and drug abuse prevention in honor of past Oconomowoc High School associate principal Jennifer Bukosky.

Haunted Ball

Adding to the fun and excitement this year is OPEF's inaugural Haunted Ball, an elegant masquerade event for ages 21 and older, planned for Friday, Oct. 29, at the Olympia Resort and Conference Center.

Tickets are $40 per person. The spectacle will include creative costumes, food, entertainment, dancing to the Booze Brothers, a live auction and cash bar to bring a fitting close to OPEF's October efforts.

For more information on the Haunted Ball, contact Karin Buckingham at karinbuckingham@yahoo.com or visit www.opef.info.

ROCKIN' IT - Fred Eide, left, and his daughter Ashley, of Eide Painting and Sandblasting, use spray guns to paint the individual rock shapes on the underside of the I-94 overpass at Highway P in Oconomowoc Wednesday, May 16. Each "rock" is painted individually and then speckled with black paint to make it look like granite.
