OASD takes measures against swine flu
Oconomowoc Area Schools – Three specimens that fit the Center for Disease Controls' criteria for further testing for swine flu have been sent to the State Lab or Hygiene in Madison.
With fear spreading faster than actual cases of the disease throughout the world, local agencies are urging precaution and recommending the use of preventative measures.
Schools, often a haven of contagious illnesses, are keeping a close eye on the situation.
"In coordination with our school district nurse, we will remind our staff and students of necessary health precautions, and we have sent an informational letter to our parents," said Dr. Patricia Neudecker, superintendent of the Oconomowoc Area School District.
"There are no confirmed swine flu cases in Wisconsin, however, we try to respond proactively to any situation, which could place our students in jeopardy," she added.
As of Tuesday, there were 64 confirmed cases of swine flu throughout California, Kansas, New York, Ohio and Texas, the Centers for Disease Control reported.
On Wednesday, an elementary school in Chicago was closed after a student there contracted a suspected case of the swine flu virus.
New York has the largest number of swine flu cases, with a heavy concentration at a Catholic school in the Queens section of New York City, where students recently went on a spring break trip to Mexico.
While there have been no confirmed cases in Wisconsin, health officials think it's possible the state might see cases in the next few days, according to a letter from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to school administrators.
Swine flu symptoms include lethargy, fever, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu have also reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Those who are thought to be sick are encouraged to stay home from school or work and limit contact with other people.
The Wisconsin Department of Instruction recommends the following prevention methods:
• Cover all coughs and sneezes
• Wash hands frequently, especially after coughing, sneezing and blowing one's nose
• Avoid touching the nose, mouth and eyes
• Properly dispose all contaminated tissues
ProHealth Care is advising people with flu symptoms who have travelled to areas in Mexico or the United States where there have been confirmed cases of Swine Flu to take the following measures as necessary: Call their primary care physician; Call Nurse-On-Line at (262) 544-2745; go to a ProHealth Care Urgent Care clinic and go directly to the main desk.
If people feel their illness is life-threatening, call 9-1-1, or go to the nearest emergency department and go directly to the main desk.
