Coupons available for Silver Streak cab service

City of Oconomowoc – Coupons for discounted rides are now available for seniors using Silver Streak cab service.

A little economic stimulus has been created in the form of ride voucher for a $1 price cut for those who depend on the Oconomowoc taxi for the elderly.

The Silver Streak provides auto transportation for ambulatory adults over the age of 55 and for ambulatory disabled people of any age.

"Right now, rides are $4.50 for a one-way fare. If they (riders) sign up for a card through the county, it's $3.50 (each way)," said Jeff Ek, president of the Silver Streak Board of Directors

The coupons offer another dollar off that price and can be purchased individually or in groups for $25, $50 and $75, through the cab service.

Silver Streak, a mainstay in the community since its inception in 1991, operates through a combination of grants, donations and fares.

The service operates within boundaries in the City of Oconomowoc: east to the YMCA at Pabst Farms, south to Valley Road, north to Lang Road and west to the Jefferson County line. A detailed map of the service area is available online at www.silverstreakinc.org

According to Ek, those borders may soon expand.

"We're now considering expanding the territory to cover the new hospital coming in," he explained.

The service currently operates two vehicles with four drivers from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Ek said reservations for rides should be made 24 hours in advance.

The service is a boon to seniors who want to retain self-sufficiency and not be reliant on others for transportation, and there is no doubt that Silver Streak is meeting a need with the senior population in Oconomowoc.

Many local seniors use the cab to visit the doctor, go to the hair salon or the grocery store.

According to Ek, 1,200 riders a year avail themselves of the service.

Coping with the fallout from the economic downturn has affected all segments of society, but perhaps those on a fixed income pay the biggest toll.

With the rising costs of gas and insurance, the service is an economical resource for seniors and the disabled in the community.

In addition, having a loved one rely on the cab service often alleviates concerns that family members or friends have about the senior driving.

The Silver Streak Board of Directors sees the coupons as the ideal gift for seniors and comes just in time for Father's Day.

"It's just a terrific service," Ek said.
