Backhoe takes icy dip in Nemahbin
Town of Summit — Testing the frozen waters on a snowmobile is considered a risk, but crews got more than they gambled for Tuesday when they took at 35,000-pound backhoe onto the ice of Lower Nemahbin Lake.
Summit police were called around 1 p.m. Tuesday after the backhoe fell through the ice while workers were trying to perform excavation work at a house on Sugar Island in the middle of the lake. The town does not allow vehicles on the ice, but made an exception for the backhoe to perform the work.
However, the venture was short-lived as the backhoe broke through and was pulled out of the ice roughly two hours later and luckily no injuries were reported.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), 23 people were killed last year alone in snowmobile accidents in the state of Wisconsin. This year, five people have died while snowmobiling, including the Town of Vernon's Chelsey Lobenhofer, 17, who died after she was ejected from a snowmobile and hit her head on a car on Lower Phantom Lake in the Town of Mukwonago on Dec. 23.
Officials advise anyone attempting to take a vehicle on the ice to make sure it is at least 6 to 8 inches thick.
