Band seeks to name band shell after Rhodees

City of Oconomowoc — Members of the Oconomowoc American Legion Band are hoping to hit the right note in an effort to honor the legacy of a family that has been integral to the program's success.

In a letter to the City, Don Gust, board chairman for the band, said the organization would like to begin the process of naming the band shell at City Beach in honor of the Rhodee family.

Ken Rhodee, who died last year at the age of 73, he grew up in the band that his father, Art, managed for 30 years. Ken marched in his first Memorial Day Parade at the age of 13 and continued on to his last, when he took to the parade route in his wheelchair. He too served as manager of the band.

Ken Rhodee was buried in his Legion Band uniform with drumsticks in his hands.

"After Ken's death last September, I came up with the idea and presented it to the family, to Judy Rhodee. She was overwhelmed," Gust said.

"The Rhodee family has made great contributions to the city with their music over the years. Everyone I've mentioned it to is very supportive," of the idea, he added.

Gust said he has received a letter from City of Oconomowoc Administrator Diane Gard outlining the procedure required in the naming process.

"I'm going to do it right away. I want to get started on it. It would be great if we could do it sometime this summer," he said.

"Our season starts mid-June and goes through mid-August. Since we're on the stage every Wednesday night, it would be pretty easy to get a dedication together," Gust explained.

To stand as an explanation of their contributions, and for generations to come, Gust is considering the addition of a marker for the band shell.

"Perhaps a historical plaque could be part of the band shell, by the steps to the stage," he suggested.

In addition, the band has commissioned a march to be written in Ken's honor.

Gust said the family continues to contribute, with one daughter who is active in the marching band.

"The legacy continues," Gust noted.

"It's (the Oconomowoc American Legion Band) been such a fixture in Oconomowoc for so many years," he said.

In keeping with City procedure, Gard will forward the request on to John Kelliher, the newly-named director of the Parks, Recreation and Forestry department, who assumes the post on March 15.

All costs associated with naming the facility are the responsibility of the requesting party.

The Common Council will then review the request, based on the recommendation of the board or committee.

Gust is hoping the community will back the idea.

"We're looking for support. When it comes before Council, call your alderman and let them know you're in favor of it," Gust said.
