A 'day to remember' planned in Oconomowoc for veterans

Veterans invited to luncheon at Center for Life Enrichment

City of Oconomowoc - The recently retired Chief of the Navy Reserve, and Oconomowoc native, Dirk Debbink will be the guest speaker at a luncheon planned to honor all local veterans.

Oconomowoc-area veterans are invited to bring a guest to a free luncheon held as a salute to the brave men and women who have served in the armed forces ensuring the freedoms we cherish today.

The event is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Center for Life Enrichment, 1306 W. Wisconsin Ave., and is sponsored by Oliver Construction.

"As an American-based Company, Oliver Construction is proud to support the veterans of our country that allow us to thrive in freedom," said Oliver Construction's Keith Farley.

"Additionally, my partner Robb Wierdsma and myself are proud of the fact that both of our fathers are veterans of World War II," he added.

Vice Admiral Dirk Debbink will serve as prestigious speaker on veterans' behalf with an inspirational key note address.

Other features of the event will include an Honor Guard Presentation of Colors and the Master of Ceremony for the program, Oconomowoc businessman and veteran Randy Otto, will provide American flag pins to all attendees.

"The first Veterans Day Nov. 11, 1918, was called Armistice Day, because on at the 11th hour on that 11th day the fighting stopped between the Allies and Germany. The name changed just after the Korean War from Armistice Day to Veterans Day," Otto explained.

He recalled the words of President Dwight D. Eisenhower: "On that day let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly on the seas, in the air and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom."

"Remembering - that is just what we veterans are going to do. So, whether you fired an M-1 or an M-16, flew a P-51 or an F-22, served at Midway or in the Persian Gulf, changed oil in a jeep or held the hand of a dying comrade in a rice paddy, if you served, please join with your fellow veterans as we remember together. Do it in the name of freedom. Be present and accounted for," Otto said.

Music during the program will be provided by guest vocalists David and Betty Reul.

A short presentation of the Honor Flight video will also be presented and guests who have participated in that event will be welcomed to share the experience.

Veterans and a guest will enjoy a free meal at Café LaBelle at the Center for Life Enrichment; the menu will include: beef stew, three cheese Ziti, Italian salad, buttermilk biscuits, dessert and beverage.

The program is made possible through the generosity of local businesses. Oliver Construction is serving as lunch sponsors and First BankFinancial Centre of Oconomowoc and Culvers of Johnson Creek are offering door prizes. All vets will win a door prize.

Seating is limited and no walk-ins will be allowed.

Tickets may be secured by calling or emailing Liz Mueller at (262) 560-6909 or emueller@lho.org

Please provide your phone number, the names of those attending, an address for mailing tickets and designate which attendees are veterans.

The deadline for registration is Nov. 7.
