Summit resident survey delayed
Village of Summit - A decision by the Village Board to move forward with a community survey has been postponed until later this year.
Village officials decided recently to wait to query residents on areas of interest and concern, in light of the cost of the project.
"We had a presentation from the University of Wisconsin-Extension office, and the Village Board agreed it would like to proceed, but will do it on a later timeline, this fall and next spring," explained Administrator Henry Elling.
"Ballpark figures for the survey range between $9,000 and $12,000, depending on how many questions are asked and how many residents it is mailed to," he added.
The board has $5,000 in this year's budget for the project.
While the survey will address a variety of issues, a specific list of areas it will touch on has not been put together yet.
"We will have a group of residents to help with that," Elling said.
The Village Board will approve the final document.
"Our hope is to get some direction from the survey to understand the concerns of village residents," Elling added.
Action on the University of Wisconsin-Extension survey was initially explored after a group of residents opposed gas-station zoning in the master plan that was adopted a year ago.
Previous discussions on the topic raised the idea of a possible referendum on the issue; however, officials felt that a referendum would be too limiting and suggested a survey that could be used to determine residents' thoughts and opinions on various topics.
Municipal officials also took action recently on they way in which they will handle the issue of a referendum.
"The Village Board approved a motion that the only type of referendum on any future ballot will be based on a petition from residents," Elling said.
"They would have to ask for that to go forward. It may or may not go, but it would have to be initiated by residents," he added.
