Varsity pom squad performs at state
First time in school history pom squad qualifies
Oconomowoc Area School District - Three cheers for the Oconomowoc High School varsity pom squad, which recently made school history. The squad qualified for state competition, a feat that has never been accomplished until this year.
The girls took their routine, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," to the state competition in La Crosse last weekend where they placed 12th out of 14 teams. Coach Laura Kinart pointed out that the 12th place also out of 50 teams statewide.
"They did great at state. It was their best performance of the season by far, and their enthusiasm during the performance was contagious," Kinart said.
Beyond their recent stint at state and performances before their beloved Cooney fans, the squad also competes each year at regionals in pom and one other in dance genre, Kinart explained. "This year we chose to do a kick routine as well and the girls did wonderful in that as well but the competition was fierce and they didn't place at regionals," she said.
However, there's one more chance for glory in 2012. The squad will compete at the Badgerette Wisconsin Spirit Invitational Championship on Feb. 26. And based on past performances, their competitors will be in good company.
"The girls competed in the Badgerette Pom and Dance Camp (Aug. 5) where they placed first in both their home routine and overall," explained Kinart. She said that victory garnered the invitation to the Badgerette Midwest Grand Championships on Aug. 12-13, where they again placed first in their division for pom and overall. And in December the girls competed in the Milwaukee Bucks Dance Competition while they not place, Kinart said the experience was constructive as the girls took the judges' advice and changed their routines.
The coach said making it to state this season was an amazing experience.
"The girls worked so hard on this routine all season learning it during an eight-hour practice this past summer and really went out there and put everything into the routine both at regionals and state. The Division Pom Category is the most difficult category to place in at regionals because most teams do a pom routine so there is a lot of competition against schools that have very extensive dance programs," Kinart said.
However, the OHS squad's hard work and determination paid off when they made it to the state level.
"For our girls to be mentioned alongside of these teams really proves how hard they worked. Our program is small, and these girls haven't been training for this since they were very young like other programs out there, and they still placed among teams that have been to state every year for the past 10 to 15 years," Kinart said.
She said that she and fellow coach Jamie Barwick are "beyond proud" of their squad this season because of their hard work and dedication.
"They are an amazing group of girls and we are lucky to be their coaches."
