Wales man charged in head-on
Waukesha – A Wales man was charged March 19 for allegedly causing a head-on collision in the Town of Summit on March 17.
Thomas M. Massey Jr., 61, of 611 Criglas Road, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court with two felony counts of first-degree reckless injury, and two felony counts of intoxicated use of a vehicle causing great bodily harm. Massey appeared in court March 19 and a cash bond was set at $2,500. He is scheduled to appear in court April 9 for a preliminary hearing.
According to the criminal complaint, Massey was driving east on Highway 18 at about 4:25 p.m. when his 2006 Chrysler entered the eastbound lane and struck a 2004 Audi head-on.
Julie P. Hoffman told police her 16-year-old daughter was driving the car and attempted to swerve to avoid the oncoming car but was unable to do so, the complaint said. Hoffmann suffered a broken ankle and was taken to Waukesha Memorial Hospital. Her daughter, who was not identified in the complaint, was taken to Children's Hospital with head injuries; initially, it was believed she may not live as a result of the injuries, the complaint said.
However, hospital officials later said she was recovering and had received numerous staples and stitches to her head, the complaint said. A hospital spokeswoman said Monday that she was released March 18.
Emergency crews had to use the Jaws of Life to access victims in both vehicles.
An officer smelled alcohol coming from Massey, who said he had had one drink. Massey had suffered injuries as well and was unable to take a physical field sobriety test and had difficulty blowing into a Breathalyzer due to his ribs hurting, the complaint said.
The officer noticed Massey's speech was slurred and his eyes were red and bloodshot.
