First half woes too much to overcome

Oconomowoc girls stumble in WLT race

In the end the beginning was too much to overcome.

Despite battling back from a 17-point halftime deficit, the Oconomowoc girls basketball team suffered its second-straight conference loss Thursday night, dropping a 52-49 nail biter to host Wisconsin Lutheran.

After a difficult first half in which the Raccoons struggled to take care of the ball and Wisco's Kelsey Frey had her way on offense, Oconomowoc came out with renewed energy. Head coach Bob Shea had only one starter on the floor to start the second half and by the end of three periods, Oconomowoc had trimmed the deficit to 11.

"The second quarter was a complete train wreck for us," Shea said. "We didn't box out, turned the ball over and let them get some baskets in transition."

A three-pointer by Emily Klitzing and a free throw by Jorie Perrine actually gave the visitors a 1-point lead with three minutes left in the game, but Oconomowoc fouled on the ensuing trip down the floor and two free throws gave the Vikings a lead it would not relinquish. The Raccoons held the ball for most of the game's final minute trailing by three but the Vikings' defense kept Oconomowoc from getting a good shot.

"It was disappointing that we took the lead but couldn't finish the deal," Shea said.

It was the Vikings who came out in force to start the game staking a 16-10 lead at the first quarter. Turnovers, which troubled the Racoons against Beaver Dam, kept Oconomowoc to only four points in the second quarter. Wisco scored six straight points to take a 31-14 lead into the break.

The Raccoons left points at the line hitting only 10 of 20 free throws in the game. Mandy Prom led the Racoons with 16 points but in a rare event, the senior did not get to the line. Klitzing finished with nine points and Abby Thelen eight.

Abby Natzke finished with four points. It was Natzke and the Racoons' second line of players that jumpstarted the second-half rally.

"I thought Abby Natzke definitely gave us energy coming in off the bench on Thursday," Shea said.

Wisco's Frey led all scorers with 20 while Karynda Dupree, returning to Wisco's lineup from injury, added 15.

It was the girls first lost against a Little Ten oppponent other than Beaver Dam in the last two seasons. Oconomowoc, now 6-2 and two games behind front runner Beaver Dam in the Little Ten, returns to its home court at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against West Bend East.
