The Grimm Reaper
Cooney bowler hits two 800s in two weeks
For most bowlers, it takes an entire career to reach the two goals that everyone in the sport covets, a 300 game and an 800 series. More than 99 percent of all league bowlers never reach those lofty accomplishments.
For Oconomowoc's Randy Grimm, it recently took only 11 days for the 39-year-old to obtain both.
On Monday, Jan. 23, Grimm fired a monstrous 833 national honor count in the Monday Men's league at Mapleway Bowl in Oconomowoc. That night, everything was working for Grimm. He opened with a 255 game and followed with singles of 278 and 300. He finished the night with 16 strikes in a row and had 23 strikes in his final 24 deliveries. The perfect game was the third of his career and the 800 was his second, and also his best. He had 32 strikes for the night.
Fast forward to last Thursday night, Feb. 2. Bowling in the Mixed Major league at Hartbrook Lanes in Hartland, Grimm was destroying the pins once again. This time, he fired an 816 national total, recording games of 286, 262 and 268. In the first game, he opened with the first 10 strikes before missing the head pin on his 11th delivery and leaving the 1-2-4-8.
"I was really disappointed with not getting the 300 in that first game," Grimm said. "I was locked in pretty good. I guess I was more embarrassed than anything else. I mean, I missed the head pin. I just didn't get the ball out of my hand the way I wanted to. But things worked out. I got the 800, and that was nice."
Things have been working out quite well on the lanes for Grimm this season. He's averaging 220 at Mapleway Bowl and a hefty 231 at Hartbrook Lanes. Last year, he averaged 225 at Hartbrook and 221 at Mapleway.
But what about all of his success the last couple of weeks? Grimm thinks he knows the answer.
"I bought two new bowling balls about three weeks ago, and I have to believe they've helped me a lot," Grimm said. "The funny thing is I used both of them in getting the 800 totals. I used one of them at Mapleway and then I used the other one at Hartbrook. The newer balls are hitting a lot harder. I just wasn't happy with what I was using. They seemed to be getting weaker and weaker every night out. I wanted to get something new, right out of the box. I guess that turned out to be a pretty good move."
In the 833 series, Grimm even had one open frame, leaving a pocket 7-10 split in the first game. He said he threw every ball but two solidly in the pocket. He filled all the frames in the 816 series.
"The key to getting scores like that is carrying," Grimm said. "The way the game is these days, it's all about carry, getting the corners out. The new balls we use today really hit hard."
Having some skill doesn't hurt either.
