Amy Sandel, a student in Brock Rumohr's ceramics class, made connections between her studies in sociology and her art. As Amy writes, "The ability to work hard in class as a student and have it directly influence benefits in the classroom is a great thing, and has been educationally beneficial for all of us ceramics students. As amazing as it is for us to be able to help ourselves, we also have the ability to help the community." Amy presented her proposal to all the ceramics classes, suggesting that part of the profits from the spring ceramics sale be donated to Filterpure, a nonprofit organization that provides third-world countries with water filters that are made almost entirely of ceramic materials. http://www.livinglakecountry.com/kettlemoraineindex/news/classwork-has-global-impact-b9927938z1-211181391.html Wed, 12 Jun 2013 06:12:30 PDT KMMS: Embedding technology standards http://www.livinglakecountry.com/kettlemoraineindex/news/kmms-embedding-technology-standards-b9926010z1-210231361.html Eighth-grade students in Peter Rortvedt and Katie Hoff's social studies classrooms at Kettle Moraine Middle School (KMMS) are working to create Google websites that showcase portfolios of their work. With the assistance of the district's technology integrator, Krista Moroder, students are able to demonstrate digital competency using skills that colleges and potential employers recognize as important for success: creativity and innovation; communication and collaboration; research and information fluency; critical thinking, problem solving and decision making; digital citizenship; and technology operations and concepts. These six skills have been identified by The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) as universal standards and are recognized across the nation. By applying these standards to student learning and use of technology, KM teachers are able to strategically design projects that involve responsible use of digital resources. http://www.livinglakecountry.com/kettlemoraineindex/news/kmms-embedding-technology-standards-b9926010z1-210231361.html Wed, 05 Jun 2013 06:33:16 PDT Students enlighten community with museum http://www.livinglakecountry.com/kettlemoraineindex/news/students-enlighten-community-with-museum-b9920472z1-209330041.html Forty-five students in John Hallagan and Terry Kaldhusdal's fourth-grade classes at Magee Elementary School have worked together this spring to create the third annual Conservation Museum within their classrooms.
