Sussex substation may open in June or July

County, village share the cost of the $18M facility

Village of Sussex — Waukesha County and village officials are hoping to be in their new $1.8 million joint public safety facility by the end of July or early August.

However, Assistant Village Administrator Jeremy Smith said it will be up to Triad Construction Inc. of West Allis to determine whether those hopes are fulfilled.

Triad is contractually obligated to the have the building completed on Sept. 14, and it will be up to the company to determine whether it wants to finish the project ahead of schedule, according to Smith.

The project is an approximately 6,000-square-foot addition to the east side of the village Fire Station on Main Street, east of Highway 164.

Most of the addition will house a new substation for the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department. But the project also includes a significant upgrade in training facilities and sleeping quarters for the village Fire Department, according to village officials.

The substation will be the headquarters for deputies patrolling the northeast quadrant of the county as well as deputies who are providing contractual police services for the Villages of Sussex and Merton and the Town of Lisbon. There will also be a detective bureau in the substation.

There is an approximately 1,600-square-foot office area with 11 work stations for detectives and deputies in addition to smaller private offices and interview rooms. The substation is also equipped with separate men's and women's lockers, showers and toilet facilities.

In the back of the new addition, adjacent to the Fire Station, will be a large training room that will be shared by the Fire Department and sheriff's office.

As part of the remodeling of the existing Fire Station, six new overnight sleeping rooms have been added.

The new sleeping rooms are a significant improvement over the existing sleeping quarters that are in what once served as a large closet, according to Smith.

Smith said the new sleeping quarters will help the village facilitate, in the future, more full-time or volunteer firefighters on duty at the station around the clock.

The department has two full-time firefighters and well as paid-on-call volunteers. The volunteers are paid a stipend to spend the night at the Fire Station.

The new sleeping quarters were created by remodeling a large training room in the existing Fire Station that will be replaced by the new training room behind the substation and adjacent to the Fire Station.

At the front of the new addition will be a large public reception area. A receptionist provided by the village will be on duty from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to assist people who walk into the station seeking assistance from either the Police or Fire departments.

There will also be an emergency telephone available for use when the receptionist is not on duty.

One of the most dramatic architectural effects of the addition is a long hall with a barrel-shaped overhead skylight that extends the length of the hallway.

The interior hallway separates the existing Fire Station from the new addition and sheriff's substation.

Both the substation and the Fire Department will have independent security systems that will control access to the individual departments.

The Village of Sussex provided about $1.3 million and Waukesha County contributed $500,000 to help pay for the construction of the sub station.
