Principal, pastor shave heads for good cause

St. John's Lutheran School students donate 900 items to Sussex Food Pantry

Lannon — Students at St. John's Lutheran School stepped-up a to a challenge recently to benefit the food pantry, and their principal and pastor wound-up with no hair to help a good cause.

The school's 111 students were challenged to bring in 500 items to the Sussex Food Pantry with the promise St. John's Lutheran School principal Daniel Feuerstahler would shave his head if they met the mark. Pastor Jeff Duquaine agreed to go sans hair if students brought in another 250 items.

"The kids really went at it and exceeded that," said Feuerstahler.

Three days into the collection students brought in about 470 items and a week later the total hit 745 items, Feuerstahler said. When the donation ended, students had brought in nearly 900 items to benefit the Sussex Food Pantry.

As promised, Duquaine and Feuerstahler had their heads shaved Monday. Angela Hopf, a hairstylist and daughter of the school's third and fourth grade teacher Dorothy Treuden volunteered to do the honors, said Feuerstahler, who laughed he'd no longer have to worry about a comb-over.

Administrators throughout the area are giving students a little extra incentive to help out the food pantry.

Willow Spring Learning Center Principal Margee Tackes spent a day working on the roof of the building in October after four-year-old kindergarten students met and surpassed her challenge to raise more than 1,200 items for the Sussex Food Pantry during the school's food collection service project.

Sussex-area Outreach Services Board President Al Wick said there are very appreciative of the students' donations.

"We are so grateful for the efforts of students in this community," said Wick. "It's heartwarming to see such generosity from so many families during these difficult times."

St. John's effort to help the food pantry was a way of living out their school theme this year, "Living Our Faith." The school has a number of projects planned this school year in addition to their weekly collection to benefit mission projects. This holiday season, St. John's Lutheran School plans to provide gift cards to needy families and donate mittens and scarves to a ministry in Milwaukee.

The Sussex Food Pantry is still in need of donations.

"The Food Pantry continues to need donations of food and money to remain well-stocked," Wick said. "We purchase items such as perishables and personal care items that we lack using cash donations from individuals and organizations." The pantry is currently most in need of canned tomato products, pork & beans, juice, flavored rice and laundry soap, Wick said.
