Gypsy moth spraying slated for next summer in town

Northeast subdivisions in town targeted

Town of Lisbon — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) intends to aerial spray to control gypsy moth caterpillars next summer in two northeastern neighborhoods in the town and has scheduled an informational meeting on the proposed spraying on Feb. 11.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Muellner Building at 7300 W. Chestnut St. in Wauwatosa.

Town Chairman Jeff Musche said the DNR is holding the meeting in Wauwatosa because there are several neighborhoods in the Milwaukee County scheduled for spraying this summer but Lisbon is the only community scheduled in Waukesha County.

Musche said all of the Plainview Parkway subdivision and portions of Wooded Hills subdivisions, both located along Town Line Road in the northeast quadrant of the town, will be sprayed.

Individuals who live within the nearly 400-acre area who do not want their property sprayed, can contact Musche at the Lisbon Town Hall at (262) 246-6100 or John Gall, the Waukesha County Gypsy Moth Coordinator at (262) 538-1900.

The aerial spraying is intended to reduce the damage and decrease the number of caterpillars that can result during a period of high infestation.

Large numbers of caterpillars can become a nuisance, ruining outdoor activities and increasing the chances of allergic reactions through the increased possibility of contact with the caterpillars, according to DNR officials.

The spraying is scheduled sometime between mid May and early June, depending upon weather conditions and caterpillar development.

A small, low-flying airplane will apply "Foray," an insecticide made from a naturally occurring bacteria, according to DNR officials.

Musche said there were a sufficiently large number of egg masses found in the two neighborhoods to qualify the town for the spraying program.

The DNR will pay for half of the spraying program, the costs of the remaining half will be paid for by local governments.

Mushe said it has been the town's policy that residents who directly benefit from the spraying will reimburse the town its share of the cost.

He said in 2002 residents whose properties were sprayed paid about $23 to $24.
