We could all use a little warmth

SOS fundraiser, Night to Warm Your Heart, Feb. 19

Sussex-area Outreach Services (SOS) announces the fourth annual Night to Warm Your Heart beverage tasting and auction at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19 at the Silver Spring Country Club. The event will include live and silent auctions to raise money for SOS programs and to further the SOS vision of, "Improving lives and building strong community through: Awareness, Assistance, Advocacy and Supportive Listening." SOS clients include seniors, working families, single parents, individuals and children residing in the Sussex-Hamilton school district.

"We are relying on the enthusiastic support of donors, beverage suppliers and guests to help make our largest annual fundraiser a success," said Al Wick, SOS Board President. "Ticket prices have stayed the same for last four years so we can keep it an affordable night out for couples, right around Valentine's Day." Guests will enjoy deluxe hot and cold hors d'oeuvres while sampling free wine, beer, soda and coffee generously donated by local suppliers.

The auction features donations from local companies, individuals and tourist attractions statewide. "We work very hard to obtain a broad selection of auction items at a range of prices so people feel they are getting a value for their donation," said Frank Wanner, SOS Board member and Donations Chair of the event. This year, auction items include: golf outings, weekend getaways, museum and theater packages, jewelry, art, gift baskets, sporting event tickets and more.

In addition to using the proceeds to stock the Food Pantry shelves and fund financial-assistance programs, the SOS Board will allocate a portion of the proceeds from the event to improve the Food Pantry facility.

"This year we have seen a 40-percent increase in clients, and we find that our quarters are tight," explained Aaron Schmalzle, SOS Director. "We aren't able to display all of our food, or even keep some of the clothing items we receive due to the space constraints. We have managed to get most of the services for this project donated, but some of the funds we raise will help offset the cost of materials we will need. But the end result will make the Food Pantry much more efficient for clients and volunteers," said Schmalzle.

The Night to Warm Your Heart is open to the public and reservations are $35 per person in advance and can be made by contacting the SOS Resource Center at (262) 246-9860 or by visiting sussexareasos.org.

Sussex-are Outreach Services is a 501(C) (3) organization.
