Maple students use 21st century skills to study Olympics Teacher's notebook
The Olympics project infused the following 21st century skills: • Collaboration within a team • Communication of results • Infused research skills • Digital citizenship • Critical thinking and problem solving • Technology operations • Creativity and innovation
The Olympics had special meaning for Maple Avenue Elementary School fifth-graders who participated in a project aimed at infusing 21st century skills into their studies. The project, "Visiting Vancouver - A Study of the 2010 Winter Olympics," was designed and implemented by writing-technology specialist Terri Manske, who organized the class into four-member teams that selected one winter Olympic sport on which to report.
Each team member chose one aspect of the sport including: the sport itself and its history, rules and equipment; player highlights; the country represented by the athletes; and a facet of the Olympics determined by the team. Each team created five projects, one from each student and a combined project that incorporated research from the entire team.
Students used technology skills to research and report about their topics. The project focused on collaboration among team members, communication of findings and understanding of other countries and cultures.
