Seniors help students in fashion, interior design class Teacher's notebook

Hamilton High School students in Lisa Ray-Christenson's fashion and interior design class got extra helping hands this semester. The high school students were assisted by Hamilton Seniors & Students volunteers Kathy Gentz, Connie DeBruin and Chris Dahlen who brought a lifetime of sewing experiences to the classroom. In the fashion portion of the class, students layout, cut, mark and sew fabric according to pattern instructions.

Students said they were surprised at the technical level of the instructions which called for knowing the grain and right side of the fabric and following the detailed step-by-step information precisely. Later in the semester, students will work on an interior design project by presenting ideas to hypothetical clients using three large presentation boards that detail colors, floor planning and furniture design for a specific condominium. Students who complete the course are able to earn three interior design credits from Waukesha County Technical College after taking the course at Hamilton.

Besides picking up three college credits,

students gain valuable learning

experiences including:

• Problem solving

• Technical reading

• Following detailed instructions

• Understanding the principles of design

• Coordinating and presenting information
