Historic fire truck being repaired in Butler

Village of Butler — A local company is playing an important role in maintaining a historic vechicle that survived the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, according to village officials.

During the next several weeks, Inland Power Group will be working on repairs and maintenance of the New York Fire Department's Rescue 4 truck, which is now used as part of a traveling exhibit that provides educational programs, memorials, and remembrance events commemorating the attacks that killed more than 3,000 people in the World Trade Center buildings.

At one point during the attack, Rescue 4, despite the loss of eight of its crew members who died trying to save others, was the only remaining rescue unit serving New York City. Two other rescue trucks were destroyed and two others badly damaged in the attack, according to officials with the Remembrance Rescue Project.

The Remembrance Rescue Project is a not-for-profit organization created by firefighters to restore, preserve, and share trucks of Rescue 4 and Rescue 5 of the New York fire department to serve as educational tools, historical artifacts and memorials that are intended to educate society, particular youngsters who were too young to understand the events of 9-11, about what the day means to fire service and the country.

The project works with fire departments across the country to host events throughout the year that are intended to provide education programs and memorial events that keep the memories alive of those fire fighters who lost their lives on 9-11 and who are killed in the line of duty every year, according to project officials

According to village officials, the truck will be in repairs at Inland Power Group until July 27 when it will be put on display for village residents.

Inland Power Group supports the Remembrance Rescue Project by helping to keep the historical artifacts on the road so people can learn about. honor, and remember the role of fire fighters in 9-11, according to project officials.

The truck arrived in Butler last week after participating in events at the NASCAR races at Road America in Elkhart Lake.
