Village of Sussex - The annual Lions Daze Parade held Saturday was a success with 62 units plus a few late-comers that filled in the ranks. The approximately hour-and-a-half long parade encompassed Main Street passing by residents and a half-dozen judges.

The top six categories received trophies in categories: Best Float, Most Original, Kid's Favorite, Crowd's Favorite, Best Matching Unit and Most Enthusiastic.

A reporter interviewed parade judges who were tasked with picking the top participants. "Both the Sussex VFW and the Sheriff's Department color guards who led off the parade were sharp," said one judge.

There was also a flock of political aspirants taking advantage of the large crowd passing out their information. Following them was a series of Hamilton High School units that always draw "Oh's and aahs" as they are the community's future. A couple of these units drew judges' votes and all received consideration.

The Vintage Auto unit was impressive with a lot of spit and polish to shine up the chrome. The Brookfield Dance Academy put forth a lot of effort among its many participants. The huge Meissner farm machinery parade of John Deere gear gave residents a close-up look a the farm monsters that help put bread on the table.

The Hartland Community Band belted out great music and a real tear jerker was the Ken Helman organized Vietnam Veterans float with large photos of two soldiers who were killed in action. They were Mike Wilson and Bruce Nettesheim.

And now for the winners. Best Float went to St. John's Lutheran/Peace Lutheran. Most Original prize went to Zeiler Landscaping, Kid's Favorite - and a really big overall favorite - was the racing sausages put on by Sussex Bowl. The ever-popular Brewer's mascots were on a plateau of their own racing for the cheering crowd.

The Crowd Favorite was the traditional Tripoli Shriners mini cars. The last two categories were both taken by Hamilton High entries. The Best Matching Unit went to the Hamilton Chargerettes and the Most Enthusiastic went to the Hamilton Sparklers.
