Lisbon to install new IT system

Town of Lisbon — Since his appointment to the Town Board six years ago, Supervisor Joe Osterman has believed that updating the town's Internet technology should be a high priority, but the challenge has been finding the money to do it.

Osterman will finally get his way Monday night when the Town Board approves a $9,879 bid from Kontney Computer Group of Big Bend for the installation of a new server, five new computers and new software for Town Hall.

Initially, the Town Board had budgeted about $2,000 to replace one computer in 2014, according to Interim Administrator Liz Kraus.

However, when a server at the fire station crashed, town officials decided they could not wait any longer to replace the Town Hall equipment which was older than the equipment at the fire station, according to Osterman.

Kraus estimated the server at Town Hall might be 10 to 12 years old, the computers are between 8 and 10 years old and some of the software dates back to 2003.

Both she and Osterman described the equipment as very slow and outdated.

Kraus said she plans to use money saved from two other Town Hall improvement projects to help pay for the new IT system.

She explained that the installation of a new heater and vents for Town Hall cost about $4,000 less than anticipated. She said another $1,400 was saved when replacing the telephone system was also less money than anticipated.

The telephone system had to be replaced because it was also antiquated and was dropping calls, according to Kraus.

Osterman said there is a possibility that additional improvements may have to be made to the phone system.

A new heating and venting system had to installed because moisture was seeping into the old system raising the possibility of creating mold, according to Kraus.

The bids on the IT system ranged from about $9,800 to about $22,000, according to Kruas.

The largest difference in the estimate cost of the project among the bidders was labor costs, according to Osterman.
