Lisbon Winterfest slated for Jan. 25

Town of Lisbon— Park officials are keeping their fingers crossed for good weather that will help showcase the winter activities in the Lisbon Community Park during the fourth annual Winterfest scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25.

Initially, Winterfest was organized as a community event where appointed and elected town officials would have an opportunity to meet with their constituents over brats and hot chocolate next to a bon fire in a scenic winter park setting, according to Marlene Kumitsch, chair of the Park Committee.

The refreshments are traditionally served in an enclosed shelter located adjacent to the ice skating rink. In addition to hot chocolate and hot dogs or brats, the menu also sometimes includes chili and smores.

But, lately the event has given the town an opportunity show off the winter activities such as ice skating, sledding, and cross country skiing in the 125-acre park located along the Bark River and near the intersection of Lake Five and Oakwood Roads, she added

"There are a lot of people who are not aware of all of the winter activities available in the park," Kumitsch said.

For example, the park provides an excellent venue for cross country skiing because of the number of trails that have been groomed by Park Superintendent John Greiten and town public works employees.

There is a giant sledding hill that extends from near the ball diamonds on the upper level of the park down to the lower level of the park east of the ice skating rink

Each winter a specially designed parking lot is flooded to create the ice skating rink.

Although snowmobiling is not permitted in the park, there is snowmobile access to the Bug Line Recreational Trail from a park parking lot located near the trail.

Kumitsch, however, admits that weather than can be a big factor in determining the size of the crowd and availability of events at the Winterfest.

Last year, she noted, it was chilly and windy. The year before temperatures climbed and some of the snow in the park melted the week before the event. However, Greiten hauled snow from other parts of the park onto the sledding hill and built an improvised sled run that gave kids and adults an opportunity to sled despite the weather.

Kumitsch is hoping for a sunny day with moderate winter temperatures that will show off the park's winter landscape.
