Many incumbents run unopposed
Incumbent town supervisors, school board members and village trustees in the Town of Lisbon and Village of Sussex appear likely to seek re-election without challenges in the 2014 municipal elections.
Individuals seeking municipal offices must have filed nominating petitions and other candidacy documents by the close of business on Tuesday, Jan. 7 in order to have their names placed on the Feb. 18 primary or April 1 general election ballots. Otherwise, those candidates would have to seek office as a write in candidates.
The deadline for filing the documents is after the publication deadline for the Wednesday, Jan. 8 addition of the Sussex Sun.
However, clerks in both municipalities said on Monday that the only candidates who had filed documents were incumbents seeking re-election.
Town Deputy Clerk Liz Krause said incumbents Steven Panten and Ryan Lippert were the only candidates who have filed the required documents.
Krause said Panten and Lippert were also the only individuals to obtain candidacy documents from the clerk's office. However, the candidacy papers can be obtained online from the state's Government Accountability Board.
Village Clerk Sue Freiheit said four individuals, including incumbent trustees Matt Cmeyla, Pat Tetzlaff and Bob Zarzynski, have obtained the candidacy documents from the clerk's office.
The fourth individual, Jeff Knollenberg who resides on Sunset Drive, told the Sussex Sun over the week that he has decided not to be a candidate for village trustee.
The three incumbent trustees have all filed the required documents, according to Freiheit.
Two incumbents on the Hamilton School Board are also thus far running unopposed, according to school district secretary Susan Moll. Village of Lannon representative James Long and representative at-large Michael Hyland have both filed candidacy documents, she said.
So far, it appears a primary election will not be necessary in either community.
According to Village of Lannon Clerk Brenda Klemmer, two of the three incumbents with seats up for election had turned in their paperwork as of Tuesday morning: Daryl Fiene and Ron Dutcher. Ronald Nellis took out paperwork but had not yet turned it in, she said.
Klemmer added that two other residents had filed: Robb Moore and Wayne Rummel.
In the Village of Butler, incumbents Jeanne Briggs, Dave Hesselgrave and Susan Hesselgrave have all filed paperwork. Challengers include Patricia Piarks and Michael Thew Sr.
