Officials review 3-D creations of Village Park

Proposed redesign to be on display at Spring Fest

Village of Sussex - Officials have begun to take a closer look at design charrettes, or 3-D creations of a redesigned Village Park.

The Village Board and Park and Recreation Board recently met jointly to discuss the second phase of the Village Park master plan. Director of Recreational Services Amy Flaherty said the meetings are an effort to "narrow down" proposed features in the park's redesign.

"Because we're unsure of the size of the buildings, it's hard to budget. Once we have a better idea of the size and amenities," financial planning can begin, Flaherty said.

She said the Village Park redesign won't be budgeted for until the 2015 capital budget, however the village begins to plan that this summer. Flaherty said the park improvements would be done in phases.

Some of the plans include adding additional park land, moving the baseball diamonds, new soccer fields and an aquatic feature commonly referred to as a splash pad.

"There will be some adjustment and overall it will be a better layout," the director said.

She said while the village meetings are going to be held in a smaller format among officials to "stay focused and have a good discussion," the public will have a chance to look at the 3-D models at the community's Spring Fest. The community open house will be held on March 17 at Hamilton High School.

"We hope to have a display at the recreation department's booth and once they have the finished 3-D charrette, we can put it on the website. It will give people a better idea of what it will look like," compared to a map rendering, Flaherty said.

She said part of the park redesign process will include creation of a nonprofit friends group similar to the Friends of the Library.

"Once the plan is approved we can start to fundraise and look for grants. The money can be funneled through that group. We really need a core group of people looking to get it going," Flaherty said.

The department budgeted $25,000 for the park plan redesign, Flaherty said around $17,500 has been spent so far on design work. She said the most recent work for the charrettes will come out of those funds.

"I'm really excited. It will be such a major change for the village and great for everyone," Flaherty concluded.
