Sussex man charged with 5th OWI
Gregory Steen, 51, of Sussex, is facing his fifth charge of Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) after being pulled over by Village of Pewaukee Police Department on Nov. 18.
According to the criminal complaint, Steen was stopped around 2:30 a.m. after veering across the white divider line and into the other lane of traffic on Willow Grove Drive. The officer reportedly turned on his emergency lights, but Steen did not try to immediately pull over until he was at the intersection of Capitol Drive and Pewaukee Road, nearly striking a curb.
The report adds that the officer could smell alcohol coming from the car while Steen's eyes were bloodshot and glassy. He reportedly passed the counting and alphabet test but failed the horizontal gaze test, could not maintain his balance during the walk and turn test and chose to discontinue the one leg stand test after a count of four.
According to preliminary breath tests, his blood alcohol level measured at .11, and Steen was sent to the hospital for evidentiary blood tests.
Steen was previously convicted in 1994, 2001, 2004 and 2006 and could be fined between $150 and $600 or imprisoned for six months for not installing an ignition interlock device (a misdemeanor charge). His license has also been revoked for two to three years.
Steen now faces fines of up to $10,000 or imprisonment for up to six years for his newest count of OWI, a felony charge.
