Trawicki names Misko new police director

Sheriff attended trustee interviews with candidates

Village of Sussex - Waukesha County Sheriff's Lt. Torin Misko began his new assignment this week as Village of Sussex Police Services Director replacing Capt. James Gumm who was reassigned as commander of the sheriff's department second shift after being promoted from lieutenant to captain late last year.

Misko was named village police services director on Thursday, Jan. 26, by Waukesha County Sheriff Dan Trawicki. Trawicki made the announcement following a closed session of the Village Board on Tuesday, Jan. 24, when two candidates for the position - Misko and Lt. Brian Larson - were interviewed by village trustees.

The trustees provided their comments regarding the candidates to Trawicki who attended the closed session, according to Assistant Village Administrator Melissa Weiss.

"I would like to thank Capt. Gumm for his dedicated service to the Village of Sussex. He did an outstanding job working with a variety of issues and communities. While Captain Gumm's presence will be missed in Sussex, his replacement Lt. Torin Misko will bring these same qualities to this unique position. Lt. Misko has demonstrated a unique ability to problem solve through good communication," Trawicki said in a statement released by the village.

Village Administrator Jeremy Smith added, "Lt. Misko brings a lot of relevant experience to the position. We look forward to working with him and the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department to continue providing excellent police service in Sussex."

Misko, who has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Marion University in Fond du Lac, worked as a correctional officer before becoming a deputy in 2004.

In addition to experience as a deputy and detective, Misko worked in the Firearms Training Unit, the Tactical Enforcement Unit, the Waukesha County Metro Drug Unit and as a field training officer. During his tenure as a deputy, Misko was assigned to patrol the village as part of the police services contract between the county sheriff and the village.

Misko will be in charge of the day-to-day operations of the county sheriff's substation in Sussex in addition to his duties as police services director.

Gumm was also in charge of the deputy assigned to the Village of Merton based on an annual $6,000 additional service agreement between the Village of Merton and the sheriff's department. Merton village trustees are expected to review the agreement, but village officials said they anticipate the agreement would continue.

Trawicki's participation in the Sussex Village Board meeting last week resolved issues raised by the Sussex Sun regarding whether the village board had the authority to meet in closed session with the two lieutenants.

State law allows municipalities to hold closed sessions for the purpose of discussing compensation or performance evaluations of employees over which the governmental bodies have jurisdiction and responsibility, however, the deputies are employees of Waukesha County.

During the closed session Trawicki offered his confidential evaluations of the two lieutenants seeking the police service directors' post, which is permitted by the state law since Trawicki has jurisdiction and responsibility for the officers.
