Chargers boys fall to Germantown
The Chargers basketball season ended right where it did a year ago, falling at the hands of Germantown High School in the second round of the WIAA Division 1 playoffs.
Hamilton, after defeating Oconomowoc last Tuesday in the regional semifinal, was topped by the Warhawks in the regional final, 56-45. Last season, Hamilton was defeated at Germantown in the same spot, 77-40.
With the tournament split, the Chargers finished 13-11 overall this winter. Germantown heads into the WIAA sectional at the Al McGuire Center this weekend with an 18-6 record.
Brian Krohn scored 16 points for Hamilton, and Eric Reimer had one of his better games on Saturday with 12 points.
Brett Meinecke had 11 points, but the fall off offensively after that hurt Hamilton's upset chances.
"We needed more out of a few other guys," said coach Andy Cerroni. "I thought we executed our game plan pretty well defensively. We didn't want it to turn into a track meet, and for the most part, we were in the game."
Cerroni said his club trailed most of the second half by two or three possessions and just couldn't get any closer to the Warhawks.
"It seemed like we were always down 4 or 5 points," Cerroni said. "They hit some big shots when they had to and late in the game, and when we had to foul, they made their free throws. One player that hurt us was Malcolm Bowers, who scored 17 points. We thought that was a bit uncharacteristic, but our guys did a pretty good job on their regular scorers. Our guys left it all on the floor again. That's all you can ask."
