John Seiler was outstanding at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium on Feb. 23, and so were the rest of the swimmers from Menomonee Falls/Hamilton co-op.

Seiler finished in second place in the WIAA Division 1 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.26. Jon Roberts of Muskego was the state champion in that event at 21.10. Seiler followed up with a second place race in the 100 butterfly at 50.45, trailing only Ben Gebhart of Madison Memorial at 50.03.

Both times were new school records. Seiler's time in the 50 free eclipsed the 21.44 in 1995 by Bryan Bell, and the butterfly time re-wrote the 2009 mark of 51.20 set by Sean Kimmitt.

"John didn't get a great start in the the 100 fly, but he was the fastest in the water in that race," coach Eric Johnson said. "He swam phenomenal all day. John prepares to compete somewhat to himself, but on Saturday he fed off all the energy around the pool and support of his teammates."

Seiler, a senior, joined senior Sam Piette, senior Matt Ciolkosz and sophomore Shawn Brown in the 200 medley relay, scoring 14 points with a time of 1:39.68, good for 10th place.

Piette, Brown, senior Sam Neale and Seiler ended up in 11th place in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:29.37.

"Sam Piette got us off to a great start in the 200 free relay," Johnson said. "It was really exciting to see them put their best race of the season all together."

Ciolkosz competed in the 200 individual medley, finishing 16th at 2:01.08.

"Scoring 61 points was awesome," Johnson said. The state meet was an unbelievable experience for our team and a great way to finish after all the hard work these guys have put in."

Madison Memorial powered its way to another Division 1 team championship with 319 points. Madison West ended up in second place with 216.5 points, and Arrowhead placed third with 194.5 points.

Seiler, who said Johnson makes swimming fun, couldn't have asked for more from himself, his coach and his teammates.

"Coach Johnson brings us all the energy you can imagine," Seiler said. "Everything turned out way better than expected. We were busy working on the little things, and that brought everything together at the right time."
