UW-Waukesha Continuing Classes Offered February 26-March 10, 2012

The following February 26-March 10, 2012 courses are offered through University of Wisconsin–Waukesha Continuing Education, 1500 N. University Drive, Waukesha, WI. 53188.

Introduction to Percussion for Kids (Ages 8 – 11)
Instructor, Michael Grassman
Does your child have a desire to hit things? Introduction to Percussion and Drums will give your child the opportunity to learn and explore the world of percussion instruments like Timpani, Snare Drums, Bass Drums, Congas, Xylophone, Sleigh Bells, Tambourine and more. This course is for all kids with no previous experience or exposure to percussion instruments. This is a great opportunity for your child to try out a new instrument without having to invest in an expensive drum set or other percussion instruments. No text required, students just needs to bring their own sticks.

Waukesha Area Youth Percussion Ensemble (WAYPE) (Grades 7-12)

Are you or someone you know a young drummer looking to explore the world of percussion while also making real music? This is a performance based-group aimed at bringing together a group of young drummers to learn and play all different types of percussion instruments with a final performance with other UW-Waukesha bands and ensembles. This is for students with some previous experience with percussion. Basic reading will be part of the course, no text required and student will be responsible for their own drum sticks. A short and informal audition will be required of all new students, please contact Continuing Education for more information. Attendance is required for all 10 classes unless given advanced notice to the class instructor. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to get lessons less than $15 a session!

Waukesha Area Adult Percussion Ensemble

Calling all men and women...come jam with us! Find a new outlet for performing other than in a garage. WAAPE’s goal is to have talented drummers come together to perform musical piece’s unlike anything they have ever been exposed to before. This is a great opportunity for the rock band drummers or concert band drummers to perform on the instruments they love in a new setting. Reading of music is required, all music provided, please provide your own sticks. Attendance is required of all 10 classes followed by a performance on Friday, May 4 with other UW-Waukesha bands and ensembles.

Basic Computer Maintenance

Be your own tech support! You don’t have to be technologically savvy to take care of your computer, check out the start-up process of the computer and the software involved. Learn how hardware and software interact. Avoid computer trouble, by discovering the typical problem areas. Finally, discuss some basic steps on resolving problems that may already be taking place. Suggested prerequisite: Exploring Com¬puter hardware/basic understanding of all parts that make computers work.

Djembe and Hand Percussion Ensemble (Ages 16+)

Have you been a part of a drum circle before, but wanted to take it to the next level? The Djembe and Hand Percussion Ensemble will focus on bringing together all different types of hand percussion instruments and djembe’s to create styles of music that span many different cultures. This class if offered for anyone ages 16 and up. No text required; bring a pair of drumsticks.

Beginner Swing Dance

So you think you can dance? Well, then, you gotta SWING dance! Swing is lively, upbeat and the perfect dance for a wide variety of music from big band, blues to rock and roll. Mostly performed in one spot, it is quite convenient on a crowded dance floor. You’ll learn the Hustle, danced to slower Swing music and the Jitterbug for fast tempo songs that will get your heart pumping. To swing dance you’ll need a partner, a sense of humor, and a bit of endurance. Always remember, wear comfortable shoes. Now let’s go swinging!

Join us for a Scandinavian Smörgåsbord! With roots in tradition this cuisine is a simple cooking style, often very mild in flavor yet hearty and perfect for a cold winter evening. The menu includes Norwegian Lefse, Danish Bleu Cheese Soup, Swedish Meatballs with Swedish Potatoes au Gratin, Danish cabbage and Aebleskivers for dessert. Instructor Staci Joers brings along her heritage and Grandmother’s Finnish Nisu (Cardamom Bread) as well as extra recipes and family favorites including Finnish/Cornish pasties, Finnish Kropser (oven pancake) and more.

Join the historic preservation movement by exploring the history of house museums such as Mount Vernon, Fallingwater (Frank Lloyd Wright’s design with Edgar Kauffman) and Tenement buildings in New York City. Led by Keith MacKay, the director of historic preservation at Ten Chimneys, discover and learn in one day about the earliest efforts to save places such as these, and the tasks needed to preserve these historic houses. Following this class step into the past with an option in-depth preservation-focused tour of Ten Chimneys.
