Silver Lake Intermediate School Swings with Seussical Jr.

Students at Silver Lake Intermediate School (SLI) have been busy practicing for their upcoming high-energy performance of Seussical Jr. directed by SLI’s Music and Drama Director Lynne Carlstein. The show opens on Thursday, April 10 at 7 p.m., with performances on April 11 at 7 p.m. and two performances on Saturday, April 12 at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. respectively.

SLI’s Seussical, Jr. features a company of 40 and will run approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes with an intermission. Sales of concessions, gift items, and a raffle to win Seussical themed baskets will help to fund scholarships for summer theater classes.

Opening on Broadway in 2000, Seussical is a musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. After Broadway, the production spawned two US tours and a UK tour. It has become a favorite for school, community and regional theaters. The story is a rather complex amalgamation of many of Seuss's most famous books (mainly "Horton Hears a Who!", "Horton Hatches the Egg" and " The One Feather Tail of Gertrude McFuzz"). Full of quirky Seuss characters, the musical has a lively and complex plot with difficult music.

“It’s been exciting to see how this musical’s challenging score has pushed this outstanding cast of kids to reach a new level of vocal production and song interpretation,” says Carlstein. “The show is non-stop music and it’s got everything from tender ballads to swingin’ jazzy numbers. Audience members will be in for a real musical treat!”

The show has provided advanced theater students from Oconomowoc High School a chance to hone their skills. Senior Macy Smith, serves as assistant director, with senior Signe Engstand as choreographer. Junior Mason Cox will head up the tech crew. The set design is managed by Eric Nelson and costumes developed by Carrie Johnson.

Tickets are $8.00 each for ages 3 and above and can be purchased online at or at the office at Silver Lake Intermediate School. Call 262-560-4309 for more information.
