Curves Breast Cancer Awareness

Curves in Wales WI Breast Cancer Awareness Month

According to the American Cancer Society, the possibility of a woman being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer during her life is about one in eight. While breast cancer deaths are going down, this is probably a result of finding the cancer earlier and receiving the improved treatment available today. This is why Curves locations across the country are encouraging women to get annual mammograms and perform monthly breast self-exams during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October.

Women who bring proof of a mammogram exam during the last year or make a donation to the American Cancer Society will have the service fee waived (a $99 saving) when joining Curves during the last three weeks of October.

“Breast Cancer is by far the most common cancer among women worldwide, and National Breast Cancer Awareness month is a perfect opportunity for us to emphasize ways of prevention” said Sandy Walker owner of Curves in Wales. “I recently had a frightening experience myself having been diagnosed with breast cancer in March of this year during my regular annual mammogram screening. Luckily my cancer was in the earliest stages and could be eliminated with a lumpectomy and radiation treatments. I can’t imagine the outcome if I had not been on a regular schedule of yearly mammograms, exams by my health care professional, and ongoing self exams.”

Recent research has linked obesity and excess weight with an increased risk for various cancers, including breast cancer.

According to Walker, Curves has been a long-committed partner in the fight against cancer, raising millions of dollars annually for research, treatment, and recovery programs. The company has helped millions of women around the world lose tens of thousands of pounds through exercise and free weight loss classes so they can reduce chances of getting various diseases including cancer.

“When women understand that one-third of all breast cancer can be related to lack of exercise and poor diet, they’ll see that they have the opportunity to have much more control over their cancer risk”, Walker said. “We want to encourage women to learn more about the impact wellness has on preventing cancer.”
